Scottsboro’s inaugural 5K proves to be a hit among the community and employees

Scottsboro’s first annual 5K was success, drawing over 120 Lozier employees and community members. Envisioned by Larry Skelton, the 5K was Scottsboro’s way to engage the community with a free admission walk or run event.

Plant Manager Drew Sauber welcomed everyone to the event, thanking Lozier for making the 5K possible and the work it does to engage the communities where its employees live and work.

After a few ground rules and course updates, the runners lined up  at the starting line and Skelton began the countdown. Sounding the horn, then runners took off, followed by those walking the five kilometer, or just over three miles, course.

Winding through Caldwell park, around an elementary school and beside the Veteran’s Memorial Park, participants headed back up the road to Lozier to cross the start/finish line one more time.

Timing of the race was provided by Fleet Feet, a national running store, to provide overall winner times as well as winning times by age groups.

A medal ceremony followed once all participants had finished. Lozier manufactured each of the medals in Scottsboro. The overall fastest male time was 21:22 and the fastest female time was 26:44. To see a full results list and more photos click here.

Sauber said that the impact of hosting the event was very positive, receiving comments thanking Lozier for hosting a well-organized, free 5K event for everyone.

Skelton felt the event was a great success, also hearing from runners that the flat course was beautiful and helped many hit personal records.

“I can’t believe such a well organized race with metals, shirts and timing was free,” a participant said after the event. “All the folks at Lozier were so friendly. I have ran multiple 5k’s for many years and this was one of my favorites. Probably the most organized 5k ever. Will be back every year they have it.”
