In its third year, the employee-led Lozier Community Grant program supported 57 nonprofit organizations across the country in 2024. Recipients were selected by employee committees in all five Lozier locations. These are the 2024 recipient organizations’ stories of impact.
Big Garden’s three-acre plot in North Omaha has had a hand in planting more than 300 community gardens since its founding in 2005. The green thumb nonprofit started with the goal of creating 12 community gardens in Omaha’s areas where low-income families suffer from food insecurity. After expanding its reach to western Iowa and Kansas, Big Garden’s mission is powerful: teach people, building communities and grow food sovereignty.
Lozier’s Community Grant will assist Big Garden in all aspects as it teaches nearly 5,000 students in its free, year-round school programming. Students learn about urban agriculture, soil preparation to harvesting and cooking fresh, healthy food. The grant will also go toward repair costs for its greenhouses which suffered from damage during recent storms. These, along with a few area gardens, grow three tons of produce that are donated to local Omaha food banks, shelters and pantries to assist people with an immediate need.
