On Monday, Quality Supervisor John Simon met with more than 40 Westside Middle School students who wanted to learn about welding and careers in manufacturing. As part of the Omaha middle schools’ Career Day, along with a number of other Industry Partners, Simon spoke to the Middle school students at Westside about the art and skill of welding/fabrication in manufacturing.
Underwood High School students made an appearance at Lozier on Monday as well. 20 students from visiting from the Iowa high school’s Welding & Fabrication Program toured Lozier’s North Plant.
Students also heard from Journeyperson Andrew Baxter, a former Underwood high schooler, graduate of the Lozier Sponsorship for the Trades program and 2020 graduate of MCC with a AAS in Precision machining.
Baxter shared his experiences at MCC and Lozier, saying that the Sponsorship program created a great environment for him to learn, balancing school with his work schedule. Baxter also shared with students that Lozier’s program is a unique opportunity for those who like working with their hands.
18 of of the 20 students who visited Lozier are pursuing a career in Skilled Trades and were interested in Baxter’s experience in his career choice of Precision Machining.
Following the question and answer portion with Baxter, Communication-Community Outreach Strategist Josh Gear and Community Outreach & Engagement Manager Ralph Kleinsmith provided tours for the students and educators.
Underwood high school is a recipient of Lozier’s scrap steel donations to support the student’s welding/fabrication training.
