Maria Vazquez makes the Nebraska “50 over 50” list celebrating those making significant impact in the state

Maria Vazquez has been named to the 2024 Nebraska 50 over 50 list, celebrating the impact and achievements of those over 50 years old across the state. Vazquez received an award for her work in the Community. Other award categories included Nonprofit, Innovation, Business, Community and Healthcare.

“I found out I received the award via email and I didn’t think it was real,” the Principal of International Business said. “After getting a phone call, I was shocked that I was chosen for the award. I hadn’t heard of this list before, but now I see it’s an important list of older leaders in our community sharing their experiences and excellence.”

Vazquez later learned she was nominated by two separate individuals wishing to recognize her work in the community. Vazquez volunteers at Omaha South High school, mentoring students and with the Nebraska Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Volunteering and mentoring students is something Vazquez loves, and wishes she would have had the same experience when she was younger.

“The award reinforces that I have accomplished something very special for my personal development and community. There is an urgent need for help in the Hispanic community, from assistance to mentoring young kids to let them know what opportunities they have, whether school or skilled trades.”

Vazquez explained how school can take a lower priority is Hispanic culture where providing for the family comes first and usually results in children continuing in their families’ footsteps.

Those who nominated Vazquez described her as a dedicated community leader with a distinguished career, significantly contributing to Lozier’s international presence and partnerships. She is also a “firm believer in the power of unity, resilience, and the preservation of cultural heritage while paving the way for future generations.”

Working with the Hispanic community for more than 30 years, Vazquez has used her community partnerships to involve Lozier in supporting the Hispanic community. Lozier and Lozier employees now participate with the NHCC, in Hispanic heritage and cultural events, and support the community on multiple committees.

“I am very happy to participate and support our community and being recognized with this award is just extra,” Vasquez said.
